Jakarta, 12 December 2022 - The earthquake that struck the Cianjur area and its surroundings in West Java at the end of November was heartbreaking as thousands not only lost their homes and livelihoods but also their families and loved ones. As of December 5, 2022, the National Disaster Management Agency (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana/BNPB) recorded there were 334 fatalities, including eight fatalities who are still missing; 593 seriously injured victims; along with 114,683 residents who are currently displaced by the quake. More than 10,000 houses and public facilities were also affected by the earthquake, including schools, places of worship, health facilities, and office buildings.
To aid in the disaster emergency response for disaster victims in Cianjur and West Java, ByteDance on Thursday (12/8) donated USD150,000 to the Indonesian Red Cross (IRC). The humanitarian aid aims to support the earthquake victims through IRC's emergency response and disaster relief work in West Java.
Indonesian Red Cross' Chairman, Jusuf Kalla said, "The large and extensive impact that was left by the Cianjur earthquake was largely in part due to the high population density in the West Java area. While disaster relief consists of work that is immediate, such as medical assistance, temporary shelter, and provision of clean water, it also entails long-term work such as infrastructure redevelopment and psychological recovery for the victims. A collective effort from all stakeholders is greatly needed, and with that, we thank ByteDance for putting value and trust in our humanitarian work," said Kalla.
"Amidst the difficult times, we are genuinely inspired by the spirit and resiliency of the Indonesian community that continues to unite and help each other, through our various digital platforms. We see how communities engaged in our platforms to share the latest information about the conditions in Cianjur, including providing information on how communities can help each other. We are deeply saddened about this tragedy and are donating USD150,000 to the Indonesian Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts," said a ByteDance spokesperson.
Through the Indonesian Red Cross, this donation will be used to support the handling of victims of the Cianjur earthquake, including but not limited to, the provision of clean water and sanitation, food, first aid and medical treatment, temporary shelter, search and rescue, tracing and restoring family links, to psychological support. The Indonesian Red Cross will work gradually for up to one year in each affected location across West Java, starting with the quake's origin in Cianjur, to deliver humanitarian aid and execute rehabilitation work.
